The Greek coastline has a total length of approximately 16,000 km. Half this is around the thousands of Greek islands, the rest extends along the mainland. One of the main characteristic of the Greek coastline is its unique diversity; beaches stretching over many kilometres, small bays and coves, sandy beaches with dunes, pebbly shores, coastal caves surrounded by steep rocks, the dark sand of volcanic soils and clean transparent waters. In 2007 428 beaches and 9 marinas were awarded the “Blue Flag” which places Greece in second place among 49 other countries.
The Aegean sea has lured sailors poets artists and scholars for thousands of years. Sailing from Athens , the Saronic & Argolic Gulfs, in the shelter of the mainland, in the Aegean are an excellent cruising ground for a 1 or 2 week charter. Cruise to the nearby Islands of Hydra,Poros, Aegina & Spetses all within sight of each other. Continuing into the sheltered Argolic Gulf and south to the spectacular port of Monemavssia which is well worth the trip. From Athens you can sail, to the Cyclades islands in the central Aegean, visit Mykonos for its lively nightlife and bustling boutiques, and neighboring Delos for its many historical temples. Drop anchor in tiny, unspoilt Iraklia to spend a long, lazy afternoon in the excellent taverna at Agio Giorgios. Be sure not to miss the chance to see the most spectacular view in these islands as you approach Santorini. Immense, dramatic cliffs topped with white sugar-loaf homes stand out against the dense blue sky.
